Naturally-dyed purple eggs

Hello friends! I’m beginning some fun experiments– dyeing with natural elements. In this case, I decided to share something fun for you for Easter if it’s something you celebrate or brunch if that’s something you celebrate.

These periwinkle / purple eggs are dyed with a half head of purple cabbage. It is SO easy. Here’s how you do it.

Roughly chop a half head of cabbage and put into a pot of cold water. Cover the cabbage with the water and add a few teaspoons of salt. Bring to a boil and simmer for 30 minutes. You can simmer for longer, but the color will already have transferred to the water. If you want to color the shells, put the eggs in when you’re done boiling and turn off the heat. You’ll let them sit in the hot water for 12-15 minutes for hard-boiled eggs. And the shells will be a pretty periwinkle color.

I wanted the whites to be colored purple, so here’s what I did instead.

I boiled my eggs separately, peeled the shells and then cut them in half. I removed the yolks and then popped the halves into my cabbage juice. I drained out all of the cabbage first. But experiment! It’s all fun and creative.

The color of the juice went from a reddish purple to a bluish purple over the course of a day. I let the eggs sit there overnight. I really had no idea what to expect but they are gorgeous. And then for serving, of course, I decorated them with flowers. I think they’d make a stunning addition to any table.
